Introduction

The Research centre supports two key components of the University’s mission; delivering its aspiration to be a research led institution with an international reputation and contributing to the economic well being of Sudan.

The University’s research profile is grounded on a broad-based platform across a wide range of disciplines. It is supported by groups and programmes, dedicated research institutes and individual scholarship structured around and across The University Faculties and educational centres.

Research focuses on global issues including health, complex networks, social organisation, environment, economics, business computer and education. Research at Sudan International University examines challenges to modern life from a wide range of perspectives, including technological and scientific advances, modern culture and thought, and applies expertise derived from addressing local, regional and national issues to global challenges, developing teams to bring disciplinary strengths together to approach key issues with global impact.

To implement scientific research activities and programmes that contribute to the development and mobilization of Sudanese resources and expertise for national development.

Aims and Objectives

The Research Centre has the same status as a faculty. The mandate of it is to:
  • Conduct and promote high level applied scientific research
  • Support and coordinate the implementation and management of multidisciplinary research in national priority areas
  • Promote and coordinate the implementation of specialized postgraduate research fellowships and capacity building in national priority areas
  • Promote and coordinate the implementation and management of commercialization of targeted activities such as scientific research, product development, innovation, patenting and value addition
  • Promote and coordinate the dissemination of research publications and others outputs
  • Carry out teaching and advisory services for the public
  • Basic research and scientific inquiry is the domain of faculties

Strategy

To implement and carry out: applied research activities in priority areas innovation, value-addition; commercialization of scientific knowledge; product development; human and institutional capacity building; teaching and advisory services to Sudanese.

The Centre Directory

The centre of Research provides information and data analysis in support of budgeting, operations, planning, and policy determinations at Sudan International University This centre maintains databases of historical and current facts about the University including applications, enrollments, degrees granted, demographics, test scores, grades, courses, and outcomes. It conducts surveys of students and faculty for the assessment of programmes and services and provides feedback for quality improvement. Planning staff also provide consultation to other campus units in conducting assessments of their programmes and technical support in data analysis and reporting. New files are frequently added. Knowledge Transfer Partnerships

Strategic business projects focused on transferring know-how from a University partner into a business or organisation in order to improve performance.

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships is a nationwide scheme that provides recent graduates with the chance to gain relevant work experience while working on a project within a company or organisation. It involves a three way partnership between the graduate (or Associate), the company and the University, and can last from 10 weeks to 3 years, depending on the nature of the project.

Sudan International Projects

(This research project was funded by the Senegal-based Trust Africa Organization.It lasted for one year starting on March 1,2011.Arrangements are well underway to publish the research results in a book form.)

This research focuses on three issues: the personal characteristics and motivations of the female entrepreneurs of Sudan, how conducive is the business environment for the female entrepreneurs of Sudan in terms of availability of finance and supporting infrastructural services, and the major constraints imposed by the society’s attitudes and government regulations on business start-up, taxes and labour that may still impede female entrepreneurs of Sudan. The date obtained through a structured survey and the questionnaire. The sample of the study is 142 female businesses of different sizes, in different geographical locations and in different industries. The study found that Businesswomen have immense problems accessing finance and many aspects of infrastructural services and government regulations on business start-up and taxes that are not business-friendly. Unexpectedly, the research findings indicate society’s positive attitudes to businesswomen. The study has made some recommendations including making microfinance initiative easily accessible, improving infrastructure, streamlining government regulations on starting-up business and licensing, introducing tax reforms and incentives, organizing businesswomen in the informal sector and enhancing businesswomen organizations’ relations with universities.

Access to Masters

The Research centre supported taught Master courses in collaboration with other research bodies and business sectors. The courses include a 1-2 month project placement in the collaborating company it is a low cost way for businesses to access postgraduate expertise and develop links with the University
